When it comes to EDC blades, there’s a big debate over whether people should be using folders or fixed blade knives. Both of these have attracted some very strong opinions. You’d be surprised to know that many of these opinions are right on both sides of the issue.
Before you decide to select one option over the other, there’s a few things to consider.
Open Carry Laws in Your Area
Depending on where you live, you might have to put your knife in an outside scabbard. Many areas have outright banned automatic blades, which makes fixed blade knives attractive for buyers. They also like that these fit readily into scabbards you can wear on the outside of your belt.
Since longer folders are often slightly awkward anyway, this has made fixed blade knives attractive for those with these concerns.
Blade Wiggle & Wear
Over time, folding knife blades can start to shake from side to side. This is sometimes derisively referred to as wiggling, especially by fixed blade devotees. Those with a keen interest in self-defense have also concerned themselves with whether or not they’d damage their knife should something very serious happen.
Fortunately, new coatings and various technical advances in the field of fasteners has helped to ensure that folders have been able to overcome some of these challenges. Very simple tactical designs tend to work best, especially if they don’t have too many moving parts.
Never Leave Out Other Styles Either
Knifeworks knows that selecting a knife to carry daily is a very personal thing. That’s why they stock a variety of other styles as well. Those who prefer balisongs or certain types of automatic knives might want to try something new from time to time, but they’ll always be able to find their old favorites in stock as well.
